‘How Philly Moves’ is a public art project celebrating Philadelphia dance.

We plan to host citywide photo shoots and every dancer in the city will be invited to come show us how they move. Participants will have access to the images of themselves afterwards. We are looking for community organizations to work with to help make more of these photo sessions happen.

The resulting images will be displayed on this site, and seek other avenues of distribution. ‘How Philly Moves’ may become a book, a traveling photo exhibit, a series of murals, an architectural installation, or all of these things.

The project was inspired by a public art commission for the 46th Street Septa station; photographer JJ Tiziou and sculptor James Peniston were finalists, but a more abstract piece was chosen for the station. It was clear however that the project had potential to continue beyond this commission due to the immense positive reaction that the proposal received from the community of dancers, and the wonderful way in which the first two test photo sessions unfolded.

For this project to be successful, the invitation needs to be broadly disseminated through many different community networks; please help spread the word so that all of Philadelphia’s dancers can hear about it! We’re also going to need a lot of community support to continue the photo sessions, so please visit the Support section to find out how you can help.

There is more information in the Frequently Asked Questions section.

You can sign up as a dancer, volunteer or both on the Sign Up page.

    Thank you!
